THE OLD RIVER

Still no trace of the river … Totò wants to tell you what happened:

If along the descent you have paid attention to the names of the streets or churches, you will have noticed that the name “Guilla” is often repeated, a popular term of Arabic derivation meaning “river”.

Still don’t hear the whimpering of the water?

And I believe it! Right here, the Papireto river flowed until the beginning of the seventeenth century. Where did it go? Underground! It had become a sort of open sewer which made the neighborhood a veritable hotbed of epidemics. It’s also for this reason, the Capo district has maintained its popular vocation over the centuries.
